I'm not a Expert and don't claim to know all but I just (being a optimist) feel we have to push forward with science and technology despite the risks if we are going to make it off the planet and expand before we go boom one way or the other as any single planet species does inevitably (As you know from your above statements on Probability and Nature) and thought I detected a anti-nuke emotional response in your comments.
It's Scary stuff but risk and rewards go hand in hand and so far Japan is way ahead in the game when it come to nuclear power even with these accidents.
Who's going to provide them with a alternative?
Remember nothing is certain but death in the long run, and if we have to pay taxes in the short run, lets use them to distribute the risk of death of the species.
History shows Humans advance by adapting the world to us, not us to the world, sure we change too but we are close to controlling that as well via Science and Technology
Greens tend to want to devolve us IMHO.|||Quote:

Science!
||||||volcano erupted in southern japan. leave my people alone!!!|||Soviet (?) science! Small pic, but try to zoom in

Got a link for this?
Didn't the cooling system fail because the electricity went down anyway? So there wasn't really a problem with the plant itself, they just didn't have proper backup plans. I read they didn't even have an input for external generators. These things are planned for the worst cases, if they can take a direct hit from a 747 a tsunami shouldn't be a problem. Don't blame the powerplant, blame the people who designed the electricity input |||The Tsunami better not hit US coasts, since that would delay Diablo3 or maybe there won't even be a D3 anymore =(|||Quote:

No, they can't. All I heard is that a 10 ton metal rod (or so) at 700km/h will not pierce it. However, a 747 weighs up to 40 times as much and if the fuel ignites...|||http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=d77_1295940782
It's only an F4, but still, it's going 800km/h. I doubt anyone could fly a 747 at that speed into it. I bet the wall would hold relatively well even if it flew into it half that speed. But my point is that I doubt the tsunami (or earthquacke) did much damage to the plant itself, rather than to the infrastructure around it. No electricity, no cooling = meltdown. But I'd rather hear the facts first before blow alot of gas here |||An empta F4 weighs 12.7 tons, a fully loaded 747-AF has a weight of 447 tons. Even if it travels at just half the speed, its kinetic energy will be 9 times as high (and 36 times as much at the same speed) and I didn't even take the exploding fuel into consideration (the F4 in the video wasn't fueled). Before placing any bets on it, make a google search for "plane crash nuclear power plant", you will find a lot of articles (not counting those from organizations which might be biased) which say that it will have desastrous effects. err, I mean |||Yes yes, I did the calculations, and my statement might have been a slight exxageration But the point is still this: if it can take that kind of hits, the tsunami should'nt be a problem. Not sure how it can handle the quacke, but I beleive the plant itself took it without any major damage
