fill me in on the large hadron collider...

[:1]http://public.web.cern.ch/Public/en/LHC/WhyLHC-en.html

A few good quotes should speak volumes more than anything I could say on the issues so:

quoted from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Large_Hadron_Collider

On The LHC

"The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is a particle accelerator located at CERN, near Geneva, Switzerland. It lies in a tunnel under France and Switzerland."

"When activated, it is theorized that the collider will produce the elusive Higgs boson, the observation of which could confirm the predictions and "missing links" in the Standard Model of physics and could explain how other elementary particles acquire properties such as mass."

Have a looky

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:CMS_Higgs-event.jpg

Cool!

"Concerns have been raised that performing collisions at previously unexplored energies might unleash new and disastrous phenomena. These include the production of micro black holes, and strangelets, potentially resulting in a doomsday scenario."

Some quotes from the CERN (European Organisation for Nuclear Research) Homepage: http://public.web.cern.ch/Public/Welcome.html

On LHC Computing:

"When the LHC begins operations, it will produce roughly 15 petabytes [annually]"

15,000 Terabytes! with a backup held on tape at CERN. So if anyone tells you tape is out again. The information will be sent out using "The Grid" which supports 1 gigabytes per second. Not Gb/s, GB/s. That's 10,000 times faster than the net. More here: http://gridcafe.web.cern.ch/gridcafe/

" CERN employs just around 2500 people. The Laboratorys scientific and technical staff designs and builds the particle accelerators and ensures their smooth operation. They also help prepare, run, analyse and interpret the data from complex scientific experiments.

Some 8000 visiting scientists, half of the worlds particle physicists, come to CERN for their research. They represent 580 universities and 85 nationalities. "

So they're saying that the LHC goes live this year. They want to work out what causes mass. Its about slaming proton into protons and creating bosons or something. What they seem to be focused on it understanding why gravity is such a weak force. There's something called a Standard Model ("The Standard Model of particle physics is a theory that describes three of the four known fundamental interactions between the elementary particles that make up all matter." from wiki)

Its a lot to taken in especially if you're not from a physics or maths background. There's no doubt something very big is around the corner. Thoughts, more, questions, answers, more??? I don't know, share.|||Yeah, I read an article about people protesting the LHC (I think it was the LHC, I get all those acronyms confused) being created because there were still concerns it could create a singularity and destroy the planet.

Reminds me of that old urban legend that scientists at the time of the Manhattan Project were still uncertain of whether or not an atomic chain reaction would continue in the atmosphere and destroy the earth. So they tested it.|||The stuff about strange matter and black holes is scary, to say the least. Two different ways to annihilate life on Earth.|||Quote:

The stuff about strange matter and black holes is scary, to say the least. Two different ways to annihilate life on Earth.

I read somewhere that physicists were fairly sure that if strangelets existed, they would have turned the Moon to strange matter long ago. Micro black holes should evaporate due to Hawking radiation.

EDIT: Here's a link on that first part.

http://arxiv.org/abs/hep-ph/9910333|||Did the OP make his post hard to read on purpose?|||I don't think the matter of Hawking radiation has yet been settled.|||You want scary. Ok - regarding strangelets creation.

"one strangelet hits a nucleus, catalyzing its immediate conversion to strange matter. This liberates energy, producing a larger, more stable strangelet, which in turn hits another nucleus, catalyzing its conversion to strange matter. In the end, all the nuclei of all the atoms of Earth are converted, and Earth is reduced to a hot, large lump of strange matter.

This is not a concern for strangelets in cosmic rays, because they are produced far from Earth and have had time to decay to their ground state, which is predicted by most (though not all [11]) models to be positively charged, so they are electrostatically repelled by nuclei, and would rarely merge with them [12][13]. But high-energy collisions could produce negatively charged strangelet states which live long enough to interact with the nuclei of ordinary matter [14]."
From Wiki

Notice the 'high-energy' collisions bit, aka LHC. Not that I'm trying to scare the crapeazes outta-ya.|||Quote:

I don't think the matter of Hawking radiation has yet been settled.

Yeah, it hasn't. I don't really know much more than what I've read about this stuff in various articles, I'm just relaying what people much smarter than I have said on the matter.|||Quote:

But it is never just a single guerrilla fighter, they are inevitably supported by an underground movement, who are almost always civilian. Just look at Nancy Wake (RIP) and the others who terrorized the occupying forces in France. To make matters worse, these particular "single guerrilla fighters" have no fear of death and believe that their sacrifice will be rewarded in the afterlife. If the NATO will freak out from one nuke, you believe that China or Russia will not freak out when their allies or neighbours are carpet-bombed with nukes?

If you ask China or Russia while having that attitude, I would place a bet on them saying "Yes, we will" and making their threat come true if necessary. For example, they could send a nuke onto NATO territory for each nuke dropped by the NATO. Maybe they won't start with NYC, but there are a lot of less inhabited areas in NATO territory.

Your speculations about a massive retaliatory strike by the NATO are just a blind rage of your mind. It won't happen.|||

Do you think that there are many Nato members who would have the means and will power to stage a sweeping invasion? They have no money, they talk a big talk but when it comes to action, so many Nato members have the attitude of "let someone else do it" and most times that someone else is the US.|||ok... the whole nuclear war angle on this... its just ridiculous.

have you ever heard of the "MAD World" doctrine? Its pretty accurate... the problem lies in the fact that the nukes that would likely be used in retaliation will be ICBMs & the big issue is that if anyone shoots one of those ***ers off, you cant 'really' tell where its headed in the second or 3 you have to make sure your launch is in the air before it hits. In those few seconds, there will be more shot off by all the panicking military of any power that has access to such things... cascade effect.

and for the record, it takes way less than 50 nukes to start a nuclear holocaust... particularly of the type/size that would be flying at that point... only hope lie in the possibility that after the first few detonate it would so alter Earth's EMF enough that the rest wouldn't detonate properly... and that this would happen is just a theory.

much more likely is a chemical/biological attack that will be unable to be contained... frankly, this scares me waaaayyy more than a nuclear war. I mean, come on, would you rather go in a blast that instantaneously converts you into a puff of hydrogen, or of spending a week dying slowly to some mutated form of leprosy?|||In many German cities, Muslim arbiters, or "peace judges," are settling criminal cases before law enforcement can bring the cases to court. I'll have to respectfully disagree with you on this one.

Yes, the jihad is stage-managed by a crowd of cartoon-ishly malevolent jackass types. Yes, the countries hosting it are laughable in their attempts to ape Western civilization (I'm sure you've seen the pictures of Iranian weapons testing). Yes, their culture is deeply and inherently flawed, so much so that it causes their armies to be easily routed (an inability to live in a high-rise building because it places you under someone else's feet, for example).

But you should never underestimate the sheer power of an infinite number of such buffoons. Thanks to the AQ Khan network, they have nuclear technology if not ability, and eventually they'll manage to try something - whether using something of their own manufacture, or more likely one of the ex-USSR nukes they have managed to obtain.

That's what the so-called "Bush Doctrine" was about. We can't ignore the threat no matter how silly the cavemen making it seem.|||So what if they do get hold of a nuke?

Can they deliver it? DO you think you can buy a nuke and just like that drop it on newyork? Ofcourse you dont. Offense is much harder to pull off than defense in a war. They may be able to hold off western troops who came to their lands but they cannot attack us yet. And not in 100 years either.

OK, so assuming they do have a nuke and manage to drop it on us. Can you imagine what we will do with them? Once we are in direct life threatening situation we will literally rape them all. Bomb them all into stone age regardless of who is civilian and who is a terrorist. This is only NOW that we speak of human rights and peace, once we are in real danger, heads will roll.

The Bush doctrine? Do you mean to initiate a senseless war? The threat is ridiculously small. Even in worst case scenario the damage they can inflict wont harm 1% of the west. We on the other hand can literally kill 99% of them.|||The tough part is getting a nuke... until the time when Pakistan falls apart. I doubt that China or Russia will allow that to happen, however. Anyway, once you have a nuke, it shouldn't be much of a problem smuggle it into a harbour, for example.

BTW, they will try to get more than one nuke, of course. One to be used on the enemy, and further ones to keep in the back hand, so we don't go frenzy.

Quote:

That might happen for individuals, in "kill or be killed" situations, but not in a war of that dimensions, involving superpowers and the biggest oil exporters. BTW, it need less nukes than you might think to produce a nuclear winter.

Quote:

Sure we can, but only in theory. Once we let them know, other countries will ally with them (like China and Russia... and they will happily call dibs on all their oil then) and these countries are immune to our funny threats.

BTW, Germany has no nukes, so I guess you want the US to do it. Why are you saying "us" then when you mean "them"? |||Quote:

If we bomb them to smithereens the oil will still be there. And especially when the whole west dicides its a matter of survival all the arab countries will be in a world of pain.

AFAIK it need some 50 nukes to produce a nuclear winter. No threat.

Russia is a major fuel seller itself. They only profit from arabs getting thrown out of business. And china has 1 carrier now. What do you expect them to do? To field a war against nato? |||Quote:

Russia is a major fuel seller itself. They only profit from arabs getting thrown out of business.

Russia and China could just buy the oil, so the others don't have it. Both countries currently support a lot of states which aren't beacons of freedom, so dictators might feel tempted to ally with them than with those who want to enforce their ideas on them or pester them with complaints abut human right violations, no matter how justified we believe our claims to be. That's the difference between ideology and reality.

Quote:

And china has 1 carrier now.

The carrier means nothing in a war against the NATO, it's not needed. If you want to defeat the NATO members themselves, you can skip conventional warfare. You need nukes on intercontinental missiles and be prepared for a counter-attack, respctively for a first strike by them, as that's the NATO strategy versus nuclear powers of a certain size.

Quote:

What do you expect them to do? To field a war against nato?

Yes, I do expect that from a country with a hundred nukes which is on the way to becoming the leading world power. They have enough nukes to make a massive threat towards anybody who dares to threaten or attack their allies. You are suggesting an escalation of a kind which was avoided during the cold war and if the decision makers think like you, we will have one again soon.|||Quote:

So what if they do get hold of a nuke?

Can they deliver it?

Yes. That's the problem. Do you think for a second that the filth wouldn't butcher thousands of their own just to have a chance at getting <you>? You KNOW that's how they think. The tunnels in Gaza, the radical elements in Jordan, the pitiful joke of the Lebanese military - there are a number of vectors it could be used from. It wouldn't destroy Israel, but it would be more than enough to destabilize you in conjunction with an offensive.

Quote:

DO you think you can buy a nuke and just like that drop it on newyork? Ofcourse you dont.

No, but it would be child's play to place one in a shipping container and bring it up the Hudson River.

Quote:

This is only NOW that we speak of human rights and peace, once we are in real danger, heads will roll.

They are assured that we will prevent you. I suspect they're right. You nuke Mecca, we'll turn our gaze aside while someone else does the same to you.

Quote:

The Bush doctrine? Do you mean to initiate a senseless war? The threat is ridiculously small.

There was nothing at all senseless about the Iraq adventure - just stupendously ill-managed. The whole "you break it, you buy it" concept that the Progressives of both parties demand we shoulder is insane.

Quote:

Even in worst case scenario the damage they can inflict wont harm 1% of the west. We on the other hand can literally kill 99% of them.

Oh, come on. We can't kill them capably; they breed like roaches and hide like rats. Our technological infrastructure are just as vulnerable as theirs, and while it would take a while to destroy it, the sophistication and interdependence of our systems would cause extensive harm. Just look at what the Democrat-supported fraud in our housing market has done to the world's economy.

I remember going to Best Buy with my friend and his dad. I wasn't really looking for anything, but my friend's dad wanted to buy a laptop hard drive so he can put it in a USB case and have a portable HD of small size. The problem arose after he bought the case and realized that it only accepted the older ATA hard drives so we had to look specifically for those. I was walking around the store and told them I'll be looking at other stuff meanwhile they get the HD. D: D: D: D: All hard drives have ATA ports; however, working around that stuff, you should probably know that the older ATA ports were actually called Parallel ATA ports (aka PATA) and the newer ones were called Serial ATA ports (aka SATA). -.- Of course this didn't even matter anyway because you can tell the difference between the two by looking at the picture of the hard drive on the box. The older ports look like so:

Spoiler

And the newer ones look like so:

Spoiler

That's a significant difference in look. I skimmed the shelves with my eyes and in a matter of seconds found a suitable one for the case that we were trying to equip. I take it off the shell, hand it to my friend's dad and say "Here you go. That's what you're looking for." The lady looks at me baffled and asks me "How do you know?" To this day I can't believe I said "Because I'm not an idiot." I gotta say though, it was satisfying as hell -.- Those people really shouldn't be hired there. Pathetic.|||......ignore, double post.|||Quote:

hahahaha! best. post. ever. when i was at school last year, i had a friend work at Wal-Mart in the Electronics section. his managers were idiots and the people he dealt with irked him so much.

i was actually at Wal-Mart this past saturday night looking for nails; nails to hang pictures and stuff. so, im in the hardware section and i see hammers. i see plastic mallets. do i see nails? hell ****ing no. i looked up and down the hardware aisle, the paint aisle, the lamp aisle, even the automative aisle and i could not find those little bastards. to make things worse, not only was i already agitated because i could not find nails, there was a baby that was screaming bloody murder and would not shut up! i think he was on the opposite side of the store and i could hear him clearly. would not shut up for 15 minutes (idek if he ever hushed). it was even more nerve racking and never had i wanted a cigarette more than that moment. luckily, im in my dormant stage of smoking, so i went home (WITHOUT the nails), ate a little bit, drank some coke, went to bed.

Yeah Women who can't do anything else so they have a kid.

Wow the one thing they manage to do on time in there life

(although not without complaining the whole time)

and invoke the Mom Authority ID then try and use it on everyone, all the time..I bet that sounds sexy in Dutch Vi

I'm all for mothers who have children and love and take care of them but do not make their children the center of everyone's universe.

I don't think I ever sound sexy. I do however sound completely different in Dutch - since my English evolved it's almost like I now have two personalities: my normal Dutch one and a sharper English one (mild Irish accent)

I like good Sax better|||"political correctness" interfering with efficient communication.

"He's the white, younger guy in home office..."

"There are like 12 of those"

"You know, he has really super short hair, kind of a widow's peak thing, sandy blonde...."

"Oh, you mean the guy with one arm?!?"

"Ummm... yeah....."

It's like they're afraid to point out someone is different. They won't identify the only black man as a black man, or the only person in a wheelchair as being in a wheelchair. The whole point when identifying one individual in a group IS to define a noticeable characteristic of that individual... by not doing so you're just wasting my time....|||Communication is a two way thing

You got a data source though so make query's and find out.

In a office setting many will not first ID the token by the factor that makes them a token.

Even if he/she's not a token but just looks like one.

If I said the guy with 1 arm to the PC ***** I'm in trouble.

But see we both don't like the PC *****

We probably piss all the PC *****es off though?

and the prior 1500+ years was all our rules...

Just a hint for those of you that are slow.

Politeness and social courtesy does not qualify if it still allows the subject to be discussed.

It's not pointless or stupid, and if your working globally you need to encourage a understanding of it if you want efficient communication across levels.|||Quote:

It might help to avoid eye contact, else they expect you to do somwething about it. Try pretending to look elsewhere. I'm doing that when crossing the street on a crosswalk (while still having an eye at the cars, of course), that way the car drivers take more care.|||Quote:

"Teasing Mod's"

Opps!

BobCox Looks Away ...|||I didn't mean it as avoiding a confrontation or as a gesture of submission, just as pretending not to take care.

If I seek a confrontation in here, people often feel intimidated or freak out completely, so what can I do about it? Ban the idiots? My participation in these forums involves moderation, I cannot always solve that problem by "taking the mod hat off", it's not that simple. So you will have to live with me being a bit more politically correct in some cases.

Thank god the mods aren't elected, else they would be even more like politicians .|||Quote:

How many letters of the word "duck" do you need to change to make it correct?

Kids here are suicidal esp when they just got an expensive waveboard. I don't get it. They just keep running in front of my bike and whilst I'm able to stop I cannot always stop in time. So why is it my fault when a stupid woman is yelling at me because her kid didn't look and just ran off the pavement straight onto the road?

She caught me in a bad mood, and nobody warned her unfortunately.

When she started yelling at me how careless I was (for cycling on the cycling lane...) and how her precious child could have died, I told her that if the kid had died, she could just have made a new one, as this one obviously didn't mean that much to her if she let it run straight onto the road and that anyways, the process of making a new child might do her sour face some good.

I'm rarely this annoyed but honestly, she was getting on my nerves.|||WOW! Viv.... lol! bra-****ing-vo!!! lol, that's awesome!

Ogre, if it helps, i have had kids bump into me while i was carrying a full tray of food. luckily, i did not drop it. kids running around a restaurant is not good and if you are a parent who allows this, STOP IT! many accidents CAN be prevented by telling your kid, "If you move one inch from that chair, I'm going to take you out to the car and beat you senseless and idc if they call the cops on me. You're my kid. I have the right to discipline you!"
