It looks like this is going to get much worse.
tl;dr: A nuclear power plant has been gradually failing since the quake this morning; last update they're evacuating 20,000 people and an expert is quoted as saying it may be just a few hours till a meltdown.|||It has To be Said.
I Blame Durf
That said I heard he's OK from a banned buddy that got a Facebook update from him. |||...they can't cool down the nukes..bad news. Could be a serious environmental disaster in addition to all the lose of life...|||Talk about the building codes all you want but watch this if you want to see it in action.

Huge Explosion at Japanese Nuclear Plant.|||I wish the potential disaster at the nuclear plant got solved somehow!
On the other hand...Japan is the most quake-conscious country in the world and yet they have nuclear plants on the shore? I would have imagined they built them somewhere else, safer from tsunami and stuff but of course Im no nuclear energy expert |||Unfortunately, the earthquake didn't play by the rules and ignored the additional security measures. It has just been confirmed that the Fukushima power plant has suffered a core meltdown.|||Quote:

They need cooling water for the plants, and japan doesn't have much in the way of big lakes afaik, I'd think that's the biggest reason for their shore placement.|||From what I have heared from my wife's family, Tokyo got out of it pretty much unharmed. SOme buildings shaked a little bit, they had no power and public transportation, but it is almost back to normal allready.
The areas that got hit by the Tsunami on the other hand... They got flattened. Nothing left there. Occasionaly a house that didnt get washed away, but that's it. And then there is of course the nuklear drama where nobody knows for sure how bad this will end.
There were more than 80 aftershocks with a magnitude of 5.0 or more, and it has not stopped yet.
Ongoing coverage on http://english.aljazeera.net/ and on cnn.
( ps : looks like Ghadaffi used the distraction and started a full size war against his people. Good times, good times. )|||http://rom.naurunappula.com/nn/1/629/529/o_701753.jpg
Durrrr
Anyways, I hope the experts can handle this. I'd hate to see another Chernobyl. (S.T.A.L.K.E.R - Shadow Of Fukushima, anyone?)
