War in Libya

Should the world intervene?

How far should the intervention go?

Do we know enough about the situation? Will just another dictator emerge?

Germany refuses to participate actively. Our constitution disallows offensive wars because of our past and this is one. Should we abandon that prohibition?|||Hate to say it but it seems like UN made the move too late. Should have enforced the no fly zone about 2-3 weeks before they did.|||To be honest, while I am glad that they now will get rid of the dictator, I dont know anythign about the rebels. I just hope that they are in the same freedom and democracy demanding spirit like the rebels in aegypt and so forth and not just a rebel group which will impose their own dictator.|||Probably not a good idea for the U.S. to get involved in this one for multiple reasons. Too tired to go into them right now though. Maybe some other time.

Doesn't matter if they are or not. There will still be somebody in the background waiting to use the rebels as a means to an end. Its them that you have to worry about. Though, you should be careful who you give that "freedom and democracy demanding spirit" badge to as well.|||Germany shouldn't abandon that prohibition... if we do, we'll get pissed, destroy all Africa, capture the Frenchies, obliterate Middle East and start WW3 until we get bombed to ashes...

Joke aside, I think there are ulterior interests in these attacks against Gaddafi's forces. There are far more endangered populations in Africa that have been without help for decades, under ruthless dictatorships, endless civil wars, daily executions and raping... but hey, who cares; only when Gadaffi drops a bomb near one of the oil reserves, nations decide to intervene. My point is that this intervention is quite hypocritical and it's only happening because it's what the allies deem best for their own interests, not for Libya.|||Well a picture is worth a 1000+ words as we learned in the Egypt thread.

Let's Hope it works out, I would love to see it get done.

Sorry the swoosh in the text is backwards - ran out of edit time|||Quote:

Amen.

People gotta start understanding that it might be wiser to let populations fight for their own freedom... then they might have half a chance to appreciate what they've obtained. It's not up to the U.S.A. to go around "ushering" in freedom for everyone all over the globe.|||I agree we can't do it for them, and in some cases the example alone can do it but if we can help at low cost why not?

I this case I hope we did not miss the boat as action a few weeks sooner would have helped more IMHO|||The world is ****ed up, the best you can do is hope that things work out.

You can go kill a dictator but another will just rise|||I wouldn't mind Sweden joining in this "war", but since we are "neutral" we will most likely ride out the storm like we always do.

I'm no big fan of jumping into war with foreign states, but this is more or less a civil war between the dictator and the people.

He has been there long enough, time for someone new. Most of the time, I'd rather leave it to the citizens of the country in question, but this time they'd just get butchered if there was no help from the outside.

As for Germany's constitution, you should rephrase it to allow participation in military campaigns with other countries (NATO/UN/such). I think Germany has learned its lesson, I don't fear a ww3 (at least not originating in Europe)
